What to Expect: Public Speaking

BS028 046D June Graphics4

Today we will go over some common questions that exhibitors have on the Public Speaking Satellite Event. How to choose a topic, how to prepare so you can do your best, what to wear and just some general information about the contest itself.

First, we’ll start with how to choose a topic. This year, the rules have changed for intermediate and senior contestants so be sure to pay attention to this part. For these two divisions, we have a specific topic that has to be followed which is; ‘Why would you be a better producer than your parents or grandparents?’ If you’re in these divisions, make certain your speech is centered on this topic. For the Junior division, your speech can be about anything related to the Red Angus breed specifically, or the beef industry as a whole. There are countless topics you can choose from, just make sure that your speech relates back to the cattle industry in some form or fashion.

Content, preparation, and delivery are what can truly make or break your speech. Make sure that when you are gathering your topic information, you obtain accurate and up-to-date information and you have reliable sources. Preparation and delivery are the more important aspects out of the three, that make up a good speech. While content is important, getting your information together in a way that it flows and makes sense to other people, and effectively delivering your speech in a fashion that leaves a positive impact on your audience or judge will be what set you apart in this competition. In your delivery, you are allowed to use props, such as posters or pictures, but no digital props like projectors and power point presentations can be used.

What to wear when presenting your speech is part of your presentation. You want to be dressed professionally and look confident in what you are doing. For the guys, we would recommend starched jeans or khakis and a button up shirt. For the ladies, nice jeans or khakis, and a dressy top. This is not necessary, but we would highly recommend dressing this way.

Lastly, here are some general rule information:

Age Divisions are determined by your age as of January 1, 2018.

You can be awarded a total of 50 points; 10 points for organization and content, 10 points for language and delivery, 10 points for presentation, 10 points for total effectiveness, and 10 points for your response to questions the judge will ask.
